Lactic Acid Production and Recovery Techniques
Summary
Lactic acid is a versatile organic acid with widespread applications in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and biodegradable plastics. Industrial lactic acid production is dominated by microbial fermentation using bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Bacillus and engineered strains, typically fed on sugar-based substrates including glucose, sucrose or starch. Recent shifts towards second-generation feedstocks have enabled the use of lignocellulosic biomass—agricultural residues such as sugarcane bagasse or cereal straw—following pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification to release fermentable sugars. Advances in metabolic engineering and process intensification have improved titres and optical purity, while extractive fermentation approaches mitigate product inhibition by removing lactic acid in situ. Downstream recovery remains one of the main cost drivers in biological production. Conventional methods include chemical precipitation with calcium hydroxide or lime, followed by acidification to regenerate free acid and gypsum by-product. Alternative techniques have been developed to reduce chemical consumption and energy demand: solvent extraction combined with salting-out agents, adsorption onto ion-exchange resins or activated carbon, membrane-based separations (micro- and nanofiltration), electrodialysis and distillation. Integrated schemes often combine several unit operations to balance recovery efficiency, selectivity, energy use and environmental impact. Such innovations are critical to meeting growing global demand and to enabling sustainable production of polylactic acid and other high-value derivatives.

Lactic Acid Production and Recovery Techniques publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in lactic acid production and recovery techniques across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Fermentation broth: The complex mixture of microbial cells, unconsumed nutrients and metabolic products resulting from a fermentation process.
Salting-out: A physicochemical phenomenon in which high concentrations of salt decrease solubility of organic compounds, facilitating phase separation.
Solvent extraction: A separation method in which solutes partition between two immiscible liquid phases according to relative solubility.
Membrane separation: Techniques (e.g. microfiltration, nanofiltration) using semipermeable membranes to separate solutes based on size or charge.
Electrodialysis: An electrically driven separation process employing ion-exchange membranes to selectively transport charged species.
Lignocellulosic biomass: Plant material composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin used as a renewable, non-food fermentation feedstock.
