Language Policy and Education in Multilingual Settings

Language policy in education encompasses the decisions and practices that shape which languages are used, taught and valued in schooling systems where multiple languages coexist. In multilingual settings, policymakers balance national cohesion, minority rights and global competitiveness. Strategies range from exclusive use of an official language to additive bilingual or plurilingual approaches that seek to build competence in several languages. Pedagogical innovations include mother-tongue instruction in early years, sequential or simultaneous bilingual programmes and emerging practices in translanguaging, whereby learners draw dynamically on all linguistic resources. Effective implementation depends on teacher proficiency, institutional support and clear benchmarks, while challenges include resource constraints, ideological tensions and varying community attitudes. Global practice reveals that robust language-in-education policies can foster equity, cognitive development and cultural identity, yet require sustained collaboration among policymakers, educators and communities.
