Language proficiency in the host country’s tongue is widely recognised as a key determinant of immigrants’ economic integration. Proficiency facilitates access to employment opportunities, influences wage levels and promotion prospects, and shapes broader social and health outcomes. The pace and extent of language acquisition are driven by factors such as age at arrival, formal education, participation in language courses, informal exposure through social networks or digital media, and the institutional framework of integration policies. Immigrants who attain higher levels of certified language competence typically experience a wage premium, reduced unemployment risk and more stable career trajectories. Conversely, delayed enrolment in language instruction or residence in ethnic enclaves can hinder language gains and amplify labour-market exclusion. Recent work underlines the importance of timely interventions and targeted support, while also highlighting the role of psychological and human-capital attributes in shaping individual learning trajectories. This body of research has global relevance, informing policymakers and practitioners in designing language programmes that bolster both economic participation and social cohesion.

Recent studies have examined the timing of enrolment in official language courses and its impact on certified language attainment among new migrants. Using longitudinal data on arrivals in Flanders between 2009 and 2021, researchers have shown that postponing participation in language instruction is generally associated with lower credentialled proficiency, once migration background and overall human capital are taken into account. Notably, for family and humanitarian migrants this negative link persists, suggesting that delayed access to structured learning exacerbates vulnerabilities and may trigger downward-spiralling motivation and opportunities. These findings underscore the necessity of early course provision and call for further causal evaluation of timing effects across diverse legal categories of immigrants.
