Summary

Estuarine environments serve as critical nurseries for numerous marine fish species, offering a complex mosaic of salinity, temperature and hydrodynamic conditions that shape larval survival and recruitment. Larval stages display a suite of morphological and behavioural adaptations—ranging from transparent bodies to active swimming and sensory capabilities—that facilitate feeding, predator avoidance and habitat selection. Dispersal patterns are largely governed by tidal currents, wind-driven circulation and vertical positioning in the water column, with many larvae employing diel vertical migration to optimise transport into favourable nursery grounds. Settlement success depends on the timely transition through preflexion and postflexion stages, coupled with access to suitable prey and refuge. Spatial heterogeneity within estuaries, including mudflats, mangroves and seagrass beds, influences local retention and connectivity, determining the distribution of early life stages. Given the global decline of many fish stocks, understanding these processes is fundamental to effective management, habitat restoration and the design of marine protected areas that encompass critical larval pathways and settlement habitats.

Technical terms

Estuary: A transitional area where freshwater mixes with seawater, creating gradients in salinity, temperature and turbidity.

Preflexion larva: An early larval stage before the notochord begins to flex, marked by undeveloped fin structures and limited swimming ability.

Postflexion larva: A later larval stage following notochord flexion, when fin rays start to form and swimming proficiency increases.

Diel vertical migration: A daily pattern of movement in the water column in which organisms ascend at night and descend by day, affecting transport pathways and predation risk.

Nursery ground: A habitat providing food resources and shelter that support the growth and survival of juvenile fish until they transition to adult habitats.
