Summary
Legal consciousness refers to the array of ways in which individuals perceive, interpret and engage with law in their everyday lives. Far from being a purely intellectual grasp of statutes, it encompasses emotional responses, moral judgements and practical strategies of compliance or resistance. This concept sits at the intersection of sociology, anthropology and legal studies, emphasising that law is not only an abstract system of rules but a lived experience shaped by social relations, cultural norms and power dynamics. Social contexts—whether kinship networks, professional settings or migratory experiences—influence how people construct images of law, draw upon legal vocabularies and mobilise rights. In turn, these everyday interactions feed back into formal institutions, altering access to justice, reinforcing or undermining the rule of law, and determining the capacity of law to regulate behaviour, resolve disputes and foster social cohesion on a global scale.
