Summary
European politics has witnessed a dynamic trajectory in the recognition and protection of LGBT rights over recent decades. Institutional reforms, activism and shifting public attitudes have driven significant legal achievements, including anti‐discrimination measures, partnerships and marriage equality in many member states. Yet the pace and depth of progress vary markedly across the continent. Wealthier and more urbanised countries have tended to adopt advances earlier, while some Central and Eastern European states have seen backsliding amid democratic erosion. Advocacy strategies range from grassroots mobilisation and strategic litigation to engagement with supranational bodies such as the European Court of Human Rights and EU agencies. Political representation has evolved as LGBT candidates increasingly contest elections and shape policy from within. However, challenges remain in resisting anti‐rights campaigns, confronting populist and nativist narratives that instrumentalise LGBT issues and ensuring substantive inclusion. Cross‐national networks of NGOs, intergovernmental monitoring and solidarity from mainstream parties have been pivotal in consolidating gains and responding to setbacks. This field of research highlights the interplay between structural conditions, movement strategies and political institutions in shaping LGBT rights across Europe.
