Summary

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disorders, type 2 diabetes, chronic respiratory conditions and certain cancers, represent the principal causes of premature mortality and disability worldwide. Their emergence is closely linked to modifiable lifestyle behaviours such as tobacco and alcohol consumption, unhealthy dietary patterns, physical inactivity, excessive sedentary time and disrupted sleep. These behaviours rarely occur in isolation; rather, they form clusters that vary across the lifespan and are shaped by socio-economic status, urban design, cultural norms and policy environments. Early life represents a critical window during which behavioural patterns—both healthy and unhealthy—can become entrenched, tracking into adolescence and adulthood and influencing cardiometabolic risk markers such as blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles. Interventions that target multiple behaviours simultaneously, tailored to individual and community contexts, show greater promise than single-factor approaches. At the population level, regulatory measures on food marketing, urban planning to promote active travel and comprehensive tobacco and alcohol control policies are essential complements to educational and clinical strategies. Recent advances in statistical modelling and wearable technologies have deepened our understanding of how energy balance–related behaviours interact over time, offering opportunities for personalised prevention and scalable public health initiatives. The global burden of NCDs demands integrated, multi-sectoral action that addresses behavioural determinants from early childhood through to older age, emphasising equity, sustainability and cultural relevance.
