Lifestyle Factors and Health Outcomes
Summary
Lifestyle behaviours such as diet quality, physical activity, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, sleep patterns and sedentary time play a central role in determining health trajectories across the lifespan. These factors influence metabolic regulation, inflammatory pathways and cardiovascular function, thereby shaping the risk of noncommunicable diseases including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders. Evidence shows that combinations of healthy behaviours act synergistically to extend life expectancy, increase years lived free of major chronic illness and reduce the burden on healthcare systems. Behavioural risk factors tend to cluster within populations and interact with social, environmental and genetic determinants of health, underscoring the need for integrated interventions and policy actions. Globally, even modest shifts towards healthier lifestyle profiles can yield substantial gains in population health, highlighting the importance of personalised feedback, community support and structural measures to promote sustained behaviour change.
