Limb Amputation and Quality of Life Outcomes
Summary
Limb amputation is a life‐altering event that affects millions worldwide, posing significant challenges to physical function, psychological well-being and social participation. Advances in surgical techniques, rehabilitation protocols and prosthetic technology have transformed post-amputation care, yet outcomes vary widely according to the level of amputation, comorbidities and access to multidisciplinary support. Common measures of success encompass mobility, comfort, user satisfaction and overall quality of life (QoL), which reflect both objective performance and subjective experience. Rehabilitation pathways now emphasise early prosthetic fitting, individualised gait training and psychosocial interventions to address body image concerns and phantom limb phenomena. Data interoperability and standardised outcome metrics enable large-scale analyses of patient trajectories, while innovations in prosthetic design—including passive, quasi-passive and active devices—seek to enhance biomechanical efficiency and reduce metabolic cost. Despite these advances, disparities persist in low-resource settings, where cost constraints and limited specialist services hinder optimal prosthetic provision. Future directions prioritise long-term monitoring of patient-reported outcomes, integration of digital health tools and equitable deployment of emerging technologies such as osseointegrated implants and sensor-driven adaptive limbs. These efforts aim to close gaps in care and improve holistic quality of life for amputees globally.
