Liquid Metal Battery Technologies and Applications

Summary

Liquid metal batteries comprise two liquid metal electrodes separated by a molten salt electrolyte. This architecture delivers high current densities, rapid charge–discharge rates and long cycle life by avoiding solid–solid interfaces prone to fracture. Electrode materials such as sodium, zinc, bismuth and antimony are selected for their abundance, low cost and suitable electrochemical potentials. Molten salts serve both as separator and ion conductor, enabling operation at elevated temperatures where component interactions remain fully liquid. Fluid dynamics within the cell play a crucial role in mass transport, influencing performance and self‐discharge. Phenomena such as electro‐vortex flow, solutal convection and magnetohydrodynamic instabilities can enhance mixing or, if uncontrolled, limit capacity. Advances in multiphase modelling and flow control aim to optimise electrode utilisation and minimise concentration gradients. Applications span grid‐scale energy storage, integration with intermittent renewables, load balancing and microgrid support. The fully liquid design offers scalability and modularity for large‐scale deployment, addressing global demands for low‐cost, durable stationary storage.

Liquid Metal Battery Technologies and Applications publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in liquid metal battery technologies and applications across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Liquid metal battery: A rechargeable cell using liquid alloys as electrodes and a molten salt electrolyte to achieve fully liquid operation.

Molten salt electrolyte: An ionic conductor composed of fused salts that separates electrodes and supports ion transport at elevated temperature.

Coulombic efficiency: The ratio of charge extracted during discharge to charge supplied during charging, indicating charge retention fidelity.

Electro‐vortex flow: Fluid motion generated by the interaction of internal electric currents and self‐induced magnetic fields within a liquid metal electrode.

Solutal convection: Buoyancy‐driven flow arising from concentration gradients of dissolved species in a liquid medium.

About these summaries

This Nature Research Intelligence Topic summary is created with the cited references and a large language model. We take care to ground generated text with facts, and have systems in place to gain human feedback on the overall quality of the process in line with our AI principles. We strive to create accurate and useful summaries for people unfamiliar with the research topic and that supports this goal. These pages are a beta release and will be updated as we learn how best to help people gain value from a research topic summary.
