Livelihood Strategies and Agrarian Change in Southeast Asia

Livelihood strategies in Southeast Asia are undergoing profound transformation as smallholder and frontier communities navigate the twin pressures of market integration and environmental change. Traditional subsistence systems are diversifying into mixed portfolios that combine staple cropping, cash‐crop cultivation, wage labour and non-farm enterprises. Agrarian change in the region is marked by spatially and temporally variable crop booms, land‐use transitions and patterns of intensification that reshape both local economies and ecosystems. In upland zones, the rapid adoption of hybrid maize and perennial cash crops alters soil management, tenure arrangements and social relations within farming households. In lowland deltas, smallholders negotiate flooding regimes and input costs while pursuing high-value vegetables and fruits for urban markets. Across these contexts, trade-offs emerge between economic gains, food security, social equity and ecological resilience. Understanding these dynamics demands interdisciplinary frameworks that capture nested boom-bust trajectories and the variegated pathways through which agrarian transformation unfolds. Such insights are essential for designing policy interventions that support sustainable intensification, protect vulnerable groups and foster adaptive capacity amid global change.
