These analyses demonstrate that local river catchments, rather than distant deserts, were the dominant sediment sources throughout multiple glacial cycles. By comparing isotopic signatures of loess deposits with potential source rocks and alluvial sediments, the research reveals predominantly westerly and north-westerly wind regimes, challenging earlier assumptions of Saharan contributions to European loess.

Complementary work on late Marine Isotope Stage 3 sequences in the Lower Danube Basin has combined high-resolution grain-size data, magnetic parameters and geochemical proxies to reconstruct shifts in large-scale atmospheric circulation. Findings indicate that intensification of the Siberian High during late MIS 3 induced more continental conditions over Europe and drove a southwards displacement of the Westerlies. Such atmospheric reorganisation, together with volcanic forcing, is hypothesised to have influenced human dispersal corridors into Central and Western Europe.
