Long-Term Outcomes and Quality of Life in Trauma Patients

Summary

Survivorship of severe injury has improved substantially, yet trauma frequently results in long-standing physical impairments, chronic pain, psychological distress and social disruption. Long-term outcomes encompass not only survival but functional capacity, mental health, return to work and reintegration into everyday life. Recovery trajectories are highly heterogeneous, with some patients regaining pre-injury status within months while others experience persistent deficits for years. Quality of life assessments reveal enduring problems in mobility, self-care, activities of daily living, pain management and emotional well-being. Recognising these patterns underpins the development of tailored rehabilitation strategies, early screening for risk factors and health-system planning to support both individual patients and population-level trauma care.

Long-Term Outcomes and Quality of Life in Trauma Patients publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in long-term outcomes and quality of life in trauma patients across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Health-related quality of life (HRQL): A multidimensional measure of a patient’s perceived physical, mental and social well-being following injury.

EuroQol 5 Dimensions questionnaire (EQ-5D): A standardised instrument for quantifying HRQL across five domains: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression.

Injury Severity Score (ISS): An anatomical scoring system that assesses overall trauma severity by combining the highest Abbreviated Injury Scale scores from the three most severely injured body regions.

Delphi method: A systematic, iterative process to achieve expert consensus through successive rounds of structured questionnaires.
