Summary
Male reproductive health is modulated by a complex interplay of hormonal, genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. Endocrine signals from the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis regulate testosterone synthesis and spermatogenesis, while Leydig and Sertoli cell functions ensure normal sperm production and maturation. External influences such as stress, exposure to toxins and nutritional imbalances can provoke oxidative damage, impaired germ cell development and hormonal disruption. Age-related decline in testicular function further compounds these challenges. Interventions to preserve or restore male fertility have emphasised antioxidant supplementation, phytotherapeutics, stress-management strategies and targeted pharmacological agents. Nutritional antioxidants and bioactive herbal compounds aim to counteract reactive oxygen species and support mitochondrial integrity, while synthetic modulators seek to normalise hormonal axes and cellular signalling pathways. Assisted reproductive technologies complement these approaches by addressing severe impairments of sperm quality. An integrated understanding of underlying mechanisms and translational interventions is essential to tackle the global burden of male infertility.
