Mand Training and Communication Strategies in Autism Interventions

Summary

Mand training, derived from operant principles, focuses on teaching individuals with autism spectrum disorder to request desired items, actions or information. By establishing clear motivational contexts and reinforcing verbal or non-verbal requests, practitioners foster functional communication that reduces challenging behaviour and increases social engagement. Key strategies include the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, the careful manipulation of motivating operations to evoke mands, and structured prompting procedures such as interrupted chains or incidental teaching. Contemporary approaches integrate technology-assisted devices, video modelling and systematic desensitisation of prompts. The goal is to establish spontaneous and flexible requesting across settings, partners and materials, thereby enhancing autonomy and quality of life. Evidence highlights the importance of tailoring interventions to individual learning profiles, ensuring generalisation and maintenance, and training caregivers and educators in protocol fidelity. Collectively, these advances underline the global significance of mand training as a core component of evidence-based autism interventions.

Mand Training and Communication Strategies in Autism Interventions publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in mand training and communication strategies in autism interventions across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Mand: A form of verbal operant in which a request is emitted under the control of a motivating operation and maintained by specific reinforcement.

Motivating Operation (MO): An environmental event or condition that temporarily alters the value of a reinforcer and influences the frequency of behaviours that have obtained that reinforcer in the past.

Conditioned Motivating Operation (CMO): A motivating operation that acquires its effectiveness through pairing with another MO, with transitive CMOs arising when access to a stimulus is obstructed.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): A set of tools and strategies, such as picture symbols or speech-generating devices, used to support or replace speech for individuals with communication impairments.
