Summary

Marine biodiversity underpins ecosystem resilience and the provision of food, livelihoods and cultural services for billions of people worldwide. Overexploitation of fish stocks, destructive fishing methods, habitat loss and climate change are driving widespread declines in species richness, abundance and ecosystem function. Effective conservation and management must therefore integrate spatial protection, sustainable harvest and restoration of degraded habitats within a socio-ecological framework. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), quota systems based on precautionary limits, gear restrictions and ecosystem-based fisheries management seek to balance human use with the maintenance of ecological processes. Complementary tools such as other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs), adaptive spatial planning and community engagement are vital to achieve both conservation targets and sustainable fisheries. Coordinated global action, underpinned by sound science and robust monitoring, is essential to safeguard marine diversity and ensure resilient ocean systems in the face of rapid environmental change.

Research from Nature Portfolio

Controlled experiments on temperate reef habitats have quantified the ecosystem effects of commercial pot fishing within an established MPA. A four-year density gradient study revealed significant declines in reef-building organisms and target species at high pot densities, allowing the derivation of a sustainable threshold for pot fishing effort. This evidence provides a practical basis for regulating static gear in partially protected areas. Following a permanent ban on bottom trawling in a heavily exploited coastal region, population studies of predatory mantis shrimps showed marked increases in individual size and proportion of large adults, while overall abundance remained unchanged. These findings demonstrate early signs of recovery in benthic communities after removal of a major disturbance, highlighting both the promise and complexity of fishery closures in urbanised seascapes.

Static Fishing Gear: Non-mobile gear such as pots or traps that minimise seabed impact relative to mobile methods.
