Summary

The global trade in marine ornamental fishes encompasses the collection, transport and sale of thousands of reef-associated species destined for home and public aquaria. This commerce generates socio-economic benefits for coastal communities, yet frequently relies on wild collection practices that can undermine reef resilience and biodiversity. The challenges of monitoring volumes and species diversity are compounded by fragmented data systems, unregulated domestic markets and variable enforcement of fisheries regulations. In response, aquaculture initiatives have emerged to alleviate collection pressures through captive breeding and on-farm juvenile rearing, but adoption remains uneven across taxa. Integrated management approaches now span sustainable-livelihoods frameworks, harmonised trade codes, community-based fisheries management and certification schemes to balance economic development with conservation objectives. Advances in husbandry techniques, transport protocols and genetic broodstock management have improved survival rates in captive settings, yet priority remains on scaling up culture of high-demand taxa such as angelfishes, gobies and damselfishes. Future efforts will hinge on transparent supply-chain traceability, investment in small-scale hatcheries, stakeholder partnerships and policy instruments capable of aligning trade incentives with reef stewardship on a global scale.
