Throughout, maritime transport generated social savings by substituting more costly overland journeys and enabled regional specialisation, contributing directly to productivity growth. Contemporary scholarship highlights not only the economic but also the environmental and geopolitical legacies of these developments, framing sea-borne commerce as a dynamic force in state formation, capital accumulation and the diffusion of technology.
