Mechanical Properties of Ultrafine Grained Steels
Summary
Ultrafine grained steels, defined by average grain sizes below 1 µm, offer a remarkable combination of high strength and enhanced toughness that addresses the traditional trade‐off in structural metals. Grain‐boundary strengthening elevates yield and tensile strength into the gigapascal range, while tailored microstructures mitigate the ductile‐to‐brittle transition at low temperatures. Key mechanical attributes include elevated hardness, refined tensile behaviour, high impact energy absorption and improved fatigue resistance. These properties arise from controlled processing routes—such as severe plastic deformation, accelerated cooling and thermo‐mechanical treatments—that refine grains, develop beneficial textures and introduce high dislocation densities. Advances in delamination toughening, lamellar architectures and texture control have broadened the application of ultrafine grained steels in demanding sectors, including automotive lightweighting, oil and gas pipelines, and cryogenic infrastructure.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent studies have demonstrated that ferrite/martensite lamellar architectures, produced by simple alloying design and hot rolling in the dual‐phase regime, can achieve impact energies of 400–450 J at room temperature while maintaining tensile strengths of 1.0–1.2 GPa. The alternating lamellae promote controlled delamination between phases, dissipating crack‐propagation energy and effectively overcoming the conventional strength–toughness trade‐off. The processing route is industry-scalable, offering a direct path to high-performance structural steels with ultrahigh toughness without compromising strength.
Mechanical Properties of Ultrafine Grained Steels publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in mechanical properties of ultrafine grained steels across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Ultrafine-grained (UFG) steel: Steel with an average grain size below 1 µm, yielding high strength through grain-boundary strengthening.
Ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT): Temperature-dependent change from predominantly plastic deformation to brittle fracture in body-centred cubic metals.
Delamination toughening: Mechanism in which controlled separation along specific planes dissipates fracture energy and enhances toughness.
Tempforming: Thermo-mechanical process involving tempering followed by warm rolling to produce ultrafine-grained, high-strength steels.
Charpy impact toughness: Measure of energy absorbed by a notched specimen under high-strain-rate fracture conditions, indicating low-temperature toughness.
