Summary
Plastic surgery spans reconstructive, aesthetic and restorative procedures that are integral across medical specialities. Despite its broad scope, undergraduate and early postgraduate curricula often provide limited formal exposure, leading to gaps in knowledge and confidence among medical students and foundation‐year doctors. Misconceptions persist that plastic surgery is confined to cosmetic treatments, whereas its principles underpin wound management, microsurgery, craniofacial reconstruction and oncological defect repair. This educational shortfall influences career choices, referral patterns and interprofessional collaboration. Recent work highlights a global call for integrated teaching modules, hands-on skills training and structured mentorship to foster accurate understanding, enhance procedural competence and inform career decision‐making. Innovative delivery methods, including webinars and student-led interest groups, are emerging to supplement traditional lectures and clinical rotations, with the aim of aligning postgraduate training preparedness with patient care needs and workforce demands.
