Summary

Medicinal plants have underpinned healthcare in diverse cultures for millennia, offering a rich pharmacopeia of bioactive compounds derived from leaves, roots, bark and seeds. Traditional systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and indigenous African practices harness ethnobotanical knowledge to address inflammation, infection, metabolic disorders and pain. Modern phytochemical and pharmacological research has validated many of these applications by isolating alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids and phenolic acids that exert antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antidiabetic effects. Advances in analytical methods—including high-resolution mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance and next-generation sequencing—have enabled the characterisation of complex plant metabolomes and their associated endophytes. Integration of traditional wisdom with rigorous experimental frameworks has driven the development of new lead compounds and standardised herbal formulations. At the same time, studies of biodiversity, sustainable harvesting and socioeconomic impact emphasise equitable benefit sharing and conservation. Collectively, this body of research underscores the global significance of medicinal botanicals, both as accessible primary healthcare resources in low-resource settings and as sources of future phytopharmaceuticals with broad therapeutic potential.
