Mediterranean Diet Impact on Metabolic Health

Summary

The Mediterranean diet, characterised by abundant intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and olive oil, moderate consumption of fish and red wine, and limited red and processed meats, exerts wide‐ranging benefits on metabolic health. At a population level, adherence to this pattern is associated with lower incidence of type 2 diabetes, improved glycaemic control and reduced prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Mechanistically, its high content of monounsaturated fats, polyphenols and dietary fibre enhances insulin sensitivity, attenuates systemic inflammation and strengthens antioxidant defences. Modulation of gut microbiota by plant‐derived compounds further contributes to improved lipid metabolism and energy balance. Randomised clinical trials have demonstrated reductions in visceral fat and preservation of lean mass, alongside favourable shifts in blood pressure, lipid profile and markers of subclinical inflammation. Such effects translate into decreased risk of cardiovascular events and diabetic complications. Globally, the Mediterranean diet has informed dietary guidelines and public health strategies aiming to curb the rise of non‐communicable diseases, offering a culturally adaptable model for risk reduction and long‐term health maintenance.
