Summary

Megafloods in glacial settings arise from the sudden release of water impounded by ice or moraine dams and are among the most powerful agents of landscape change. Such floods derive from ice-dam failure, subglacial drainage reorganisation or overtopping of ice-marginal lakes. Rapid water discharge produces high shear stresses capable of excavating bedrock channels, forming scabland topography and generating vast sedimentary sheets. Deposits range from boulder-rich gravel bars and dunes to finely laminated rhythmites and jökulhlaup‐derived silts. Dynamics of these events depend on dam breach mechanics, lake volume, drainage pathway geometry and downstream topography modified by glacial isostatic adjustment. Advances in high-resolution mapping, geochronological techniques and numerical flood modelling have refined estimates of peak discharge, sediment flux and erosive potential. Such research illuminates past deglaciation sequences, underpins flood hazard assessments in contemporary ice-dammed lake regions and offers analogues for megaflood processes on other planets. Understanding the interplay between flood hydraulics, sediment transport and post-flood landscape evolution remains central to reconstructing ice-age environments and anticipating future outburst scenarios in a warming climate.
