Mental Health Impact on Educational Attainment

The relationship between mental health and educational attainment is recognised as multifaceted and bidirectional. Emerging evidence identifies both selection mechanisms, where early mental health problems shape academic trajectories, and causation pathways, where academic failure exacerbates psychological distress. Key mediators include cognitive function, attendance and motivation, while contextual factors such as family support, socio-economic status and school environment modulate these effects. Globally, poor mental health contributes to school dropout, reduced grades and increased likelihood of becoming not in education, employment or training (NEET), with long-term implications for employment and wellbeing. Interventions that target mental health in early developmental windows can enhance educational outcomes, reduce socioeconomic disparities and support a successful transition into adulthood.
