Mental Health Impacts of Lifestyle Changes During COVID-19

Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated widespread alterations in daily routines, including reductions in physical activity, disruptions to sleep patterns, shifts in dietary habits, and augmented screen time. Concurrently, enforced social isolation and altered work–life boundaries have been linked to a surge in depressive and anxiety symptoms, heightened perceived stress and, in certain cohorts, post-traumatic stress responses. Vulnerable groups—such as older adults, students and essential workers—experienced differential impacts, shaped by pre-existing mental health conditions, socioeconomic status and access to social support. Conversely, engagement in regular exercise, maintenance of consistent sleep schedules, balanced nutrition and virtual social connections have emerged as protective factors, mitigating emotional distress. Collectively, these findings underscore the global significance of integrated lifestyle and mental health interventions, informing public health policies and clinical guidance to foster resilience in the face of future crises.
