Metabolomics Applications in Pancreatic Cancer Diagnostics
Summary
Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most lethal malignancies worldwide, largely owing to late diagnosis and the paucity of reliable early-stage biomarkers. Metabolomics, the comprehensive study of small-molecule metabolites in biological systems, has emerged as a powerful approach to capture the biochemical alterations that accompany tumour initiation and progression. By analysing biofluids such as serum, plasma or urine, and tumour tissue extracts, researchers can detect perturbations in amino acids, lipids, organic acids and other metabolites that reflect dysregulated pathways in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and related tumour types. Advanced platforms—most notably liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy—enable both targeted and untargeted workflows, facilitating the discovery of candidate biomarkers and the development of multi-analyte panels. These efforts aim to improve early detection, differentiate cancer from benign conditions such as chronic pancreatitis, monitor treatment response and identify prognostic signatures. Globally, metabolomics promises cost-effective, minimally invasive diagnostics that could complement imaging and genetic tests, leading to more timely intervention and improved patient outcomes.
