Metamodern Narratives in Contemporary Literature

Metamodern narratives have emerged as a defining sensibility in twenty-first-century literature, characterised by a dynamic interplay of modernist aspiration and postmodern scepticism. This paradigm foregrounds oscillation between irony and sincerity, fragmentation and cohesion, despair and hope. Authors and critics alike have noted a renewed engagement with affect, ethical commitment and ecological awareness, reflecting a world beset by global crises yet animated by the possibility of collective renewal. Metamodern texts often deploy hybrid forms—melding realism, metafiction, documentary and speculative modes—to negotiate complexity and interconnection.
