Summary
Microwave‐assisted pretreatment exploits rapid dielectric heating to disrupt the rigid structure of lignocellulosic biomass, enhancing the accessibility of cellulose and hemicellulose to hydrolytic enzymes. By combining microwave irradiation with acidic or alkaline reagents, this approach accelerates delignification, reduces reaction time and energy consumption, and minimises the formation of inhibitory by-products. Controlled microwave parameters—power level, exposure time and solvent concentration—enable fine‐tuning of biomass fractionation, yielding higher concentrations of fermentable sugars. The method has been demonstrated across diverse feedstocks, from agricultural residues to aquatic biomass, underscoring its versatility.
