Microwave Photonic Radar Technologies
Summary
Microwave photonic radar merges photonic techniques with microwave signal generation, transmission and processing to overcome the bandwidth and speed limitations of purely electronic systems. By exploiting the broad spectral range, low loss and ultrafast modulation afforded by photonics, these radars achieve extraordinarily high range resolution, rapid data acquisition and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Key system architectures include photonic frequency multiplication for wideband chirp generation, optical de-chirping for frequency down-conversion, heterodyning of pre-chirped pulses for centre-frequency programmability and time-stretch reception for real-time digitisation. Emerging integrated photonic circuits and distributed coherent aperture concepts promise scalable, compact and reconfigurable platforms. Applications span remote sensing, inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging, spectrum monitoring, autonomous navigation and contactless physiological monitoring. Ongoing challenges encompass photonic integration, phase stability and noise management, with prospects for all-optical signal processing and neuromorphic enhancements driving future advances.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent studies have demonstrated a photonic radar for contactless vital sign detection that synthesises up to 30 GHz of bandwidth to achieve millimetre-level range resolution. Sensor fusion with LiDAR principles enables accurate respiratory monitoring even in challenging scenarios. A photonics-based real-time ultra-high-range-resolution radar has been realised using optical generation and de-chirping of an 8 GHz linear frequency-modulated signal, processed with low-speed digitisation at 500 MSa/s to deliver sub-2 centimetre resolution and real-time target separation. Another work presents an all-optical central-frequency-programmable and bandwidth-tailorable radar architecture in which heterodyned, pre-chirped optical pulses yield a coherent linearly chirped waveform. Time-stretch reception facilitates high-fidelity digitisation without external radio-frequency sources, offering flexible centre-frequency and bandwidth agility.
Microwave Photonic Radar Technologies publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in microwave photonic radar technologies across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Microwave photonics: The use of photonic devices and techniques for the generation, transmission and processing of microwave or millimetre-wave signals.
Linear frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFM/CW): A chirped waveform in which frequency varies linearly with time, widely used for high-resolution radar ranging.
Photonic de-chirping: An optical mixing technique that converts wideband high-frequency echoes into low-frequency signals for digitisation.
Optical heterodyning: The interference of two optical signals to produce a beat frequency that corresponds to the difference in their optical frequencies.
Time-stretch reception: A method of slowing down ultrafast signals in the optical domain so that they can be sampled by standard electronic analogue-to-digital converters.
Photonic integrated circuit (PIC): A chip-scale integration of multiple photonic components, such as lasers, modulators and waveguides, for compact and stable optical signal processing.
