Microwave Photonic Signal Processing Techniques

Summary

Microwave photonic signal processing merges optical and radio-frequency domains to exploit the high bandwidth and low latency of photonic systems. This interdisciplinary field employs techniques such as optical true-time delay, tunable filtering, phase shifting and frequency conversion to overcome the limitations of purely electronic processors. Key methods include stimulated Brillouin scattering for narrowband filtering and delay, Mach–Zehnder architectures for precise phase and amplitude control, and optical frequency combs for multiband operation. Advances in photonic integration have enabled the monolithic fabrication of modulators, waveguides and resonators on silicon and other platforms, thereby reducing size, weight and power consumption. Reconfigurable architectures and on-chip linearisation strategies deliver high dynamic range and spurious-free performance. These capabilities have profound implications for 5G and beyond wireless networks, radar and sensing, phased-array beamforming and electronic warfare by providing real-time, wideband signal manipulation with unprecedented flexibility and precision.

Research from Nature Portfolio

Recent studies have introduced a multiband filter capable of selecting up to 12 simultaneous passbands spanning DC to 10 GHz by generating tunable optical comb lines via a Lyot loop configuration. Exceptional sidelobe suppression exceeding 30 dB and a 3 dB bandwidth of 200 MHz yield high selectivity, while the ability to switch centre frequencies and vary the number of active passbands affords unparalleled operational flexibility. Another foundational work has demonstrated an on-chip processor that tailors the Brillouin gain profile through Stokes and anti-Stokes resonances combined with RF interferometry. This approach produces reconfigurable filters with ~20 MHz bandwidth, extinction ratios above 30 dB, nanosecond-scale delays and large continuous phase shifts. By exploiting vector addition of RF signals, the phase and delay responses are amplified nearly tenfold compared with sole reliance on slow-light effects, enabling efficient on-chip manipulation of RF amplitude and phase with milliwatt-level optical powers.
