Millimeter-Wave Fiber-Optic Communication Systems

Summary

Millimetre-wave fiber-optic communication systems unite the vast bandwidth of optical fibre with the wide spectral resources of millimetre-wave radio frequencies to meet the surging demands of next-generation networks. By transporting high-frequency signals over single-mode fibre and then radiating them wirelessly or through free-space optical links, these hybrid architectures offer ultra-high data rates, low latency and extended reach. Such systems are poised to support enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine-type communications and ultra-reliable low-latency services in 5G, upcoming 6G and specialised applications such as mixed reality and autonomous platforms. Key challenges include managing fibre and wireless dispersion, suppressing nonlinear distortions and devising compact photonic components—such as injection-locked lasers and advanced modulators—that preserve signal fidelity across guided and unguided channels. The integration of free-space optical segments further extends deployment flexibility, enabling seamless transitions between terrestrial fibre backbones and short-range wireless access for indoor or metropolitan coverage.

Research from Nature Portfolio

Recent studies in 2023 have demonstrated a hybrid platform that couples 40 km of single-mode fibre with over a kilometre of free-space optical transmission and sub-terahertz wireless links, achieving error vector magnitudes and bit error rates compatible with emerging 5G new radio requirements. Complementary work has devised local-oscillator-free heterodyne architectures at 60 GHz using wavelength-locked colourless laser diode modulators, enabling 50 km of fibre-optic transport and direct millimetre-wave generation without external reference carriers. Foundational research on directly modulated dual-mode laser diodes has further advanced 60 GHz millimetre-wave-over-fibre access by suppressing intermodulation distortions and offering a spurious-free dynamic range exceeding 80 dB Hz2/3, thus laying the groundwork for high-capacity indoor and short-reach mobile communications. Together, these advances underscore the maturation of fibre-free-space-waveform convergence, highlighting practical schemes for extending ultra-broadband links across mixed transmission media.

Millimeter-Wave Fiber-Optic Communication Systems publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in millimeter-wave fiber-optic communication systems across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Millimetre-wave: Electromagnetic waves with frequencies between 30 GHz and 300 GHz, offering large bandwidth for high-speed wireless links.

Single-mode fibre (SMF): Optical fibre designed to support only the fundamental propagation mode, minimising dispersion and enabling long-reach transmissions.

Free-space optical (FSO) communication: Transmission of modulated light beams through the atmosphere or vacuum, bridging gaps between fibre segments or to handheld devices.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM): A multi-carrier modulation technique that divides a high-data-rate stream into parallel sub-streams to improve spectral efficiency and robustness.

Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM): A modulation format that conveys data through variations in both the amplitude and phase of a carrier wave, enabling high spectral efficiency.

Injection-locking: A technique that locks the frequency and phase of a laser diode to an external reference signal, reducing noise and enabling coherent mixing for millimetre-wave generation.

Dispersion-compensation fibre (DCF): Specialised fibre used to counteract chromatic dispersion accumulated in standard single-mode links, preserving signal integrity over long distances.
