Mineral Composition and Geochemical Analysis of Metamorphic Rocks
Summary
Metamorphic rocks record the transformation of protoliths under varying pressures, temperatures and fluid compositions. Mineral assemblages such as garnet, staurolite and kyanite define metamorphic facies and reveal peak conditions of regional or contact metamorphism. Geochemical analysis of major and trace elements, together with isotope ratios, permits reconstruction of protolith chemistry, fluid–rock interaction and element mobility. Advances in microanalytical methods have refined the understanding of trace-element partitioning between coexisting phases and have enabled high-resolution mapping of mineral zoning. Integration of phase equilibria modelling with field observations underpins resource exploration, informs tectonic reconstructions and guides assessment of metamorphic fluid reservoirs.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent studies have applied micro-XRF mapping, Raman spectroscopy and electron microprobe analysis to gem-quality vesuvianite (californite) from Pakistan, revealing the role of trace-element distributions in metamorphic colouration. High-resolution imaging shows clinochlore inclusions control opacity and green–yellow hues, while crystal-field transitions of Cr³⁺, Fe³⁺ and Mn³⁺ in the vesuvianite lattice govern gem-quality transparency. Oxidation state changes of vanadium during medium-grade metamorphism (300–500 °C) were traced by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, linking element valence shifts to colour modification and providing a geochemical basis for grading gem-quality metamorphic minerals.

The graph below shows the total number of articles in mineral composition and geochemical analysis of metamorphic rocks across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Metamorphic facies: A set of mineral assemblages stable under defined pressure–temperature conditions during metamorphism.
Mineral assemblage: The group of minerals present in a rock that reflects its metamorphic history and chemical environment.
Trace-element partitioning: Distribution of elements at low concentrations between coexisting minerals, used to infer metamorphic processes.
Electron microprobe analysis: A microanalytical technique that quantifies elemental composition of minerals using focused electron beams.
Micro-XRF mapping: A non-destructive method that images elemental distributions in polished sections via focused X-ray fluorescence.
