Summary
Mixed-species foraging assemblages occur when two or more bird species join forces to exploit food resources more efficiently and reduce predation risk. Such flocks often consist of a central “nuclear” species that initiates movement and vigilance, surrounded by “satellite” species that benefit from early predator detection and increased foraging success. The structure and composition of these groups are shaped by ecological gradients—including habitat complexity, resource distribution and predation pressure—and by species traits such as body size, diet and foraging substrate. Flocks may form transiently at tension zones of high disturbance or persist as stable units in mature habitats, with participants adjusting their vertical foraging strata and microhabitat use to minimise competition. Behavioural synchrony, information transfer and complementary niche use underpin the resilience and adaptive value of mixed-species groups. Understanding these associations informs conservation strategies by revealing how habitat alteration and climate change disrupt interspecific networks that support biodiversity and ecosystem function.

However, egalitarian structures may be less resilient to habitat disturbance, indicating that forest management influences the social dynamics and fitness benefits of heterospecific associations. These findings underscore the sensitivity of mixed-species flock outcomes to environmental quality and social organisation.
