Multiliteracies Pedagogy in Digital Learning Environments

Multiliteracies pedagogy reframes literacy as an expansive and socially situated practice that integrates diverse modes of meaning-making—textual, visual, auditory, spatial and gestural—within digitally mediated contexts. Originating from the New London Group’s call to account for cultural, linguistic and technological diversity, this approach foregrounds the design of learning environments that capitalise on the affordances of digital tools and platforms. Educators are encouraged to enact purposeful learning designs in which students negotiate and produce multimodal texts, drawing on a shared pedagogic metalanguage to reflect on form and function. Such learning designs address issues of equity by recognising learners’ lived experiences and by providing scaffolded opportunities to move fluidly between modes. Core elements include critical engagement with digital media, collaborative composition across analogue and digital spaces, and the cultivation of student agency in authoring meaning. Globally, multiliteracies pedagogy has significant implications for curriculum reform, teacher professional development and inclusive practice, offering a framework that aligns technological fluency with critical, creative and intercultural competencies.
