Summary

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) encompass a wide range of conditions affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and nerves in response to occupational demands. They arise from biomechanical stress—such as repetitive motion, prolonged static postures, forceful exertions and awkward positions—and from psychosocial factors including high work intensity and low social support. MSDs represent a leading cause of work‐related injury and disability across diverse sectors, from manufacturing to healthcare and education. Global estimates indicate that back pain alone accounts for a substantial share of lost workdays and long‐term impairment, imposing a heavy economic burden on employers and social welfare systems. Recent advances in biomechanical modelling, wearable sensor technology and digital ergonomic assessment have begun to inform precision interventions, while increasing attention to workplace culture and mental health highlights the need for integrated prevention strategies. Tailored ergonomic redesign, participatory training and ongoing risk surveillance have demonstrated reductions in symptom prevalence and improvements in functional capacity. However, challenges persist in translating research into policy—particularly in low‐resource settings where enforcement of occupational health standards is variable. Bridging these gaps requires interdisciplinary collaboration, the deployment of novel monitoring tools and a focus on sustainable, worker‐centred solutions.
