Summary

Musculoskeletal disorders remain a leading cause of disability and lost productivity across diverse occupational groups. Interventions in workplace settings encompass a spectrum of strategies, including ergonomic modifications, targeted exercise programmes, education and participatory approaches that engage employees in identifying risk factors. Strength training and specific resistance exercises seek to enhance muscle capacity and resilience, while ergonomic adjustments aim to reduce biomechanical strain through optimised workstation design and manual handling techniques. Multifaceted interventions integrate physical, organisational and behavioural components to address both physical demands and psychosocial stressors. Emerging models advocate individually tailored, intelligent physical exercise prescribed on the basis of health assessments and job demands, with the goal of bridging the gap between workers’ capacity and occupational requirements. Remote and digital delivery of exercise and education is gaining traction, improving access and adherence. Evidence points to the potential for significant reductions in pain and disability, improvements in functional capacity and cost savings through reduced absenteeism and presenteeism. Future efforts will need to combine rigorous evaluation designs with scalable implementation to ensure sustainable improvements in workforce health and productivity.
