Nasal Dermoid Cysts in Pediatric Populations
Summary
Nasal dermoid cysts in children account for a rare subset of congenital craniofacial anomalies arising from aberrant sequestration of ectodermal tissue during frontonasal embryogenesis. They typically present as midline nasal masses or sinus tracts apparent at birth or in early childhood. Epidemiological estimates suggest an incidence of approximately 1 in 20 000 to 40 000 live births, with no clear gender predilection. Clinically, nasal dermoids vary from superficial skin pits to deeper lesions with potential intracranial communication, risking meningitis or local deformation if untreated. Diagnosis relies on a combination of clinical examination and diagnostic imaging, most notably computed tomography to assess bony defects and magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate soft-tissue extent and intracranial involvement. Histopathological analysis of excised specimens reveals keratinising squamous epithelium with adnexal structures such as hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Surgical excision remains the definitive treatment, with approaches tailored to lesion depth and extent; superficial cysts may be removed via midline external incisions, whereas lesions with skull base involvement require multidisciplinary collaboration for complete resection and dural repair. Early intervention is associated with favourable cosmetic and functional outcomes and minimises risk of recurrent infection or skull base complications.
