Summary
The Antarctic marine ecosystem is a reservoir of distinctive chemical entities produced by invertebrate fauna that have evolved under extreme cold, high pressure and seasonal light regimes. Sponges, ascidians, corals, bryozoans, echinoderms and molluscs employ a rich palette of secondary metabolites—among them terpenoids, polyketides, peptides and alkaloids—to mediate ecological interactions, including defence against predation, competition for space and microbial fouling. The unique biosynthetic pathways underpinning these compounds often incorporate halogenation, unusual cyclisations and cold‐adapted enzymatic systems, yielding molecules with potent bioactivities such as antimicrobial, antifouling and anticancer properties. Symbiotic relationships with cold‐adapted microorganisms further expand this chemical repertoire, as bacterial and fungal associates generate complementary allelochemicals.
