Summary

Leafcutter bees (Megachilidae: Megachile and related genera) are solitary pollinators that construct nests using cut fragments of leaves. Females locate pre‐existing cavities—such as hollow stems, rock fissures or artificial trap nests—and fashion a linear series of cylindrical brood cells. Each cell is provisioned with a mixture of pollen and nectar before being sealed with further leaf pieces. Nest architecture varies among species but commonly includes vestibular cells or intercalary plugs that separate or protect brood chambers. Beyond leaves, some taxa incorporate mud, resin or plant hairs, reflecting an evolutionary diversification of nesting materials. Seasonal emergence synchronises with local floral phenology to ensure resource availability, while nest design adaptations—such as reinforced plugs or antimicrobial secretions—serve to deter parasites and pathogens. Leafcutter bees are essential contributors to the pollination of both wild and cultivated plants, making their nesting ecology a critical focus for biodiversity conservation and agricultural sustainability.

Urban environments and lowland regions exhibited higher incidence of rose‐foraging, suggesting that common ornamental species can serve dual roles in pollinator gardens by providing both nesting materials and shelter. This work highlights the need to integrate leaf selection into pollinator conservation schemes and underscores the potential of landscape planning to support wild solitary bee populations through targeted planting strategies.
