Neural Mechanisms of Health Communication
Summary
Health communication seeks to deliver preventive and therapeutic messages that effectively motivate individuals towards healthier behaviour. Cognitive neuroscience has begun to reveal the neural substrates and dynamic interactions that underpin message uptake, valuation and social transmission. Functional neuroimaging studies demonstrate that persuasive health messaging engages a core network centred on the medial prefrontal cortex, where self-related valuation processes integrate message content with personal goals. Concurrent activation of mentalising regions supports the appraisal of social relevance, while the interplay between default mode, fronto-parietal and salience networks orchestrates attention, cognitive control and receptivity to new information. Metrics of functional connectivity and network flexibility have been shown to predict real-world changes in intentions and behaviour, including smoking cessation and increased physical activity. Furthermore, engaging thought processes that heighten self-relevance and social connection has been found to amplify message impact at both neural and behavioural levels. These mechanistic insights hold global significance for optimising health campaigns by tailoring content to core neural circuits of valuation, self-reflection and social cognition, thereby enhancing message reach and efficacy across diverse populations.

Recent studies have elucidated how coordinated activity within valuation networks drives health behaviour change. One study demonstrated that functional connectivity among regions associated with positive valuation in the medial prefrontal cortex predicted subsequent reductions in sedentary behaviour, outperforming analyses of activity in individual regions. This finding suggests that the integration of message value across a network underpins the translation of persuasive appeals into action. Another investigation examined the combined contributions of the brain’s valuation and mentalising systems during exposure to text-based social media recommendations. It found that activation in both systems was associated with greater likelihood of opinion change, with the mentalising network particularly engaged by negative recommendations, and that changes in connectivity between these networks further related to the propagation of recommendations. Together, these works advance a network-level account of how health messages are encoded, personally valued and socially interpreted to drive behavioural intentions.
