Summary

Adolescence represents a critical period for the maturation of neural circuits underlying social cognition, emotional regulation and reward processing. During this time, the social brain—comprising regions such as the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), insula, temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and ventral striatum—undergoes protracted refinement. Pubertal hormones and experience reshape connectivity within and between these areas, supporting emerging capacities for mentalising, empathy, peer influence and prosocial decision-making. Reward-related regions become increasingly sensitive to social gains and losses, while control networks gradually integrate affective signals to guide adaptive responses. These changes are influenced by environmental contexts including peer acceptance, parental feedback and stress. Disturbances in this developmental trajectory may predispose some adolescents to affective disorders or social adjustment difficulties. Understanding the interplay of neural plasticity, social learning and environmental modulation has profound implications for educational strategies, preventative interventions and mental-health support tailored to the evolving needs of young people worldwide.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the dACC and anterior insula do not signal social exclusion exclusively but rather encode the salience of self-relevant social feedback, whether positive or negative. This challenges earlier models that portrayed these regions as a “pain matrix” restricted to exclusion. Instead, activation in this network reflects the significance of being evaluated by others, suggesting a unifying mechanism for social gain and loss. Other work has revealed that patterns of dACC and insula activity are better explained by self-referential salience than by valence, indicating that these regions respond to the importance of social information rather than to social pain per se. Combined, these findings shift the theoretical framework from one of threat detection to one of importance encoding, emphasising how adolescents navigate complex social landscapes by prioritising and integrating cues that matter most to their developing sense of self.
