Summary

Young adulthood is a critical period for the maturation of brain structure and the consolidation of cognitive abilities. Neuroimaging studies have consistently shown that variations in regional grey matter volume and white matter integrity underpin individual differences in functions such as working memory, processing speed, executive control and socio-emotional skills. Techniques including voxel-based morphometry and diffusion tensor imaging permit quantification of subtle anatomical features, while functional MRI reveals patterns of connectivity that support information processing. Together, these approaches demonstrate that cognitive performance reflects distributed networks rather than isolated loci, with both macrostructural and microstructural properties contributing to learning, problem-solving and social engagement. Understanding these neuroanatomical correlates in healthy young adults has implications for education, mental health and interventions aimed at optimizing brain development.

Global analyses using very large cohorts have revealed that better performance across diverse cognitive tasks is weakly yet positively associated with increased grey matter volume in widespread cortical and subcortical regions. Effect sizes are modest, underscoring the distributed nature of cognitive abilities and the need for stringent statistical control. In parallel, microstructural investigations of mean diffusivity have linked individual differences in empathizing to higher diffusivity in areas including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate and insula, as well as portions of the postcentral gyrus. These findings suggest that local tissue properties within socio-emotional circuits contribute to variation in empathic capacity, complementing functional data on mirror-neuron and salience networks.
