Summary

Speech prosody and lexical tone both rely on pitch modulation but serve distinct linguistic functions: prosody conveys intonation, stress and rhythm across phrases, while lexical tone distinguishes word meaning via syllable-level pitch contours. Neurocognitively, these features engage a hierarchical auditory network spanning core auditory areas in the superior temporal gyrus through downstream language regions in the temporal lobe and inferior frontal cortex. A dual-stream organisation has been proposed, in which a dorsal pathway governs temporal sequencing and predictive processing of prosodic cues, and a ventral pathway underlies phonological and semantic integration of pitch information.
