Summary
Bacopa monnieri, a perennial herb widely employed in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, has attracted modern neuroscientific interest for its multifaceted neuropharmacological properties. Standardised extracts, rich in triterpenoid saponins known collectively as bacosides, exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activities. These extracts modulate cholinergic signalling by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, support synaptic plasticity through upregulation of key kinases and neurotrophic factors, and attenuate oxidative stress via enhancement of endogenous antioxidant defences. Preclinical models demonstrate protection against neurotoxin-induced neuronal loss and improvements in learning and memory tasks, while early clinical trials hint at benefits in working memory, attention and information processing speed. Safety studies in animals and humans indicate a favourable tolerability profile at commonly used doses.
