Neuroscientific Mechanisms of Emotional Intelligence

Summary

Emotional intelligence encompasses the capacity to recognise, understand, regulate and employ emotions adaptively. Neuroscientific investigation has revealed that this multifaceted ability rests on coordinated activity across cortical and subcortical systems. Key nodes include the amygdala, which appraises emotional salience; the insula, which integrates interoceptive and affective signals; and subdivisions of the prefrontal cortex, which support regulation, maintenance and strategic deployment of emotional information. The dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) subserve active monitoring, conflict resolution and metacognitive aspects of emotion, whereas ventral prefrontal regions contribute to automatic regulation and valuation. Long‐range interactions among networks such as the default‐mode network, salience network and central executive network underpin both spontaneous and task‐evoked aspects of emotional processing. Functional and effective connectivity measures have demonstrated that the direction and strength of interregional influences are predictive of individual differences in emotional perception, working memory for emotion, cognitive reappraisal and social decision‐making. Understanding these mechanisms has broad implications for mental health interventions, educational programmes and workplace optimisation, offering targets for neuromodulation, neurofeedback and tailored training to enhance adaptive emotional functioning.

Recent studies have clarified how medial prefrontal regions support the active maintenance of emotional content in working memory. Healthy participants performing tasks that required holding emotional versus neutral information showed greater engagement of dorsal mPFC during emotional working memory, accompanied by suppression of ventral mPFC relative to rest. Furthermore, activation in a dorsal anterior cingulate subregion correlated positively with individual differences in emotional awareness. These findings reconcile earlier inconsistencies in prefrontal involvement and highlight a dynamic balance between dorsal evaluative control and ventral affective regulation when emotions are actively maintained for subsequent judgement.
