Summary
Research over the past decades has firmly established that the number, composition and stability of nursing staff have a direct bearing on a wide range of patient care outcomes. Adequate staffing levels of registered nurses reduce in-hospital mortality, unplanned readmissions and adverse events such as infections and medication errors, while high turnover and reliance on less qualified assistants correlate with delayed or missed care. Beyond immediate safety, nurse staffing influences patient experience, satisfaction and recovery times. Economic analyses further indicate that investment in sufficient registered nurse numbers can yield net cost savings by preventing complications and shortening lengths of stay. Globally, health systems face challenges of workforce shortages and budget constraints; optimising nurse-to-patient ratios and skill mix, and minimising staff attrition, emerge as key priorities for safeguarding quality and efficiency in acute care.
