Nursing Education and Mental Health During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a rapid transformation in nursing education, with institutions worldwide shifting from traditional classroom and clinical placements to remote learning and virtual simulations. This transition exposed students to heightened levels of uncertainty, academic overload and diminished hands-on training, which in turn exacerbated stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances and feelings of isolation. Concurrently, nurse educators grappled with redesigning curricula and maintaining competency standards under stringent public health restrictions. Mental health concerns emerged as a critical barrier to learning, motivating the integration of structured psychological support, resilience-building workshops and peer-mentoring schemes. Global surveys have highlighted variations in resource availability, technological infrastructure and cultural attitudes towards mental health, underscoring the need for context-sensitive strategies. Practical applications such as telehealth practicum, virtual reality simulations and online reflective debriefing have shown promise in bridging the gap between theory and practice while supporting student wellbeing. As the profession looks beyond the acute phases of the pandemic, lessons learned are informing long-term models that balance educational rigour with robust mental health safeguards.
