Nutrition Literacy and Food Education
Summary
Nutrition literacy and food education encompass the knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable individuals and communities to make informed decisions about food selection, preparation and consumption in order to support health and well-being. Nutrition literacy refers specifically to the ability to access, interpret and apply dietary information, whereas food literacy extends to practical competencies in planning, budgeting, cooking and critically evaluating the food environment. Together, these concepts bridge individual behaviours and broader food systems, informing policy initiatives, school curricula and community programmes. Effective food education seeks not only to transmit factual knowledge about nutrients and dietary guidelines but also to foster confidence in food preparation, to cultivate critical thinking about marketing and to promote sustainable and culturally appropriate eating practices. By strengthening these literacies at multiple levels—from early childhood education through adult learning and professional development—stakeholders aim to reduce health disparities, enhance dietary quality across diverse populations and contribute to global efforts in preventing noncommunicable diseases.
