Summary
Osteoporosis is a pervasive skeletal disorder marked by diminished bone mass and compromised microarchitecture, leading to an elevated fracture risk. Bone health depends on the fine balance between osteoclastic resorption and osteoblastic formation—a process known as bone remodelling. While pharmacological treatments remain central to disease management, growing evidence supports the role of targeted nutrition in preventing bone loss and improving skeletal integrity. Adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D and high-quality protein forms the nutritional cornerstone, yet an expanding array of bioactive compounds—ranging from polyphenols and isoflavones to lycopene and omega-3 fatty acids—has shown promise in modulating bone turnover. Functional foods such as dried plums, berries and olive oil deliver combinations of micronutrients and phytochemicals that may attenuate osteoclast activity, stimulate osteoblast differentiation and foster gut microbial communities conducive to bone health. Practical applications include tailored dietary patterns, supplementation where dietary gaps exist, and exploration of novel vehicles (for example, exosome-like vesicles) to enhance nutrient delivery.
