Summary
Weaning represents a critical transition in the life of a piglet, often accompanied by dietary, environmental and social stressors that disrupt gut integrity, microbial balance and immune homeostasis. Nutritional interventions are therefore central to supporting epithelial barrier function, modulating the gut microbiota and sustaining growth performance. Historically, high-dose zinc oxide has been employed to control post-weaning diarrhoea through multifactorial actions on gut architecture, digestive secretions and immune cells. However, environmental and resistance‐related concerns have driven the development of alternative strategies, including organic acids, natural compounds, prebiotics, probiotics and targeted bacteriophage therapies. These approaches aim to promote beneficial microbial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids, reinforce tight junctions, attenuate inflammation and selectively suppress enteric pathogens. Integrative feeding regimens that fine-tune trace mineral levels, enrich the diet with bioactive oligosaccharides and introduce microbial modulators now offer a holistic framework for improving gastrointestinal health, animal welfare and productivity on a global scale.
